Distressed locks are the bohemian cousin of the chic fake locks that were popular a few years ago, but the only difference between distressed and butterfly locks is the curly loops created in butterfly locks, giving them their signature look.

Depending on how long your natural hair is and how long you want your locks to be, you may need two types of hair. If you want to lock

Rather than your own hair, you will need about 6-8 packs of some type of water hair in 22-28 inches. This hair is curly and bouncy and is what gives you the characteristic curls that give butterflies their name.

If you decide to use strands that are longer than your own hair, you will need filler hair. Technically, you can use curly hair to fill in locks, and you can buy more of them for that purpose. But many tutorials use marley hair to create a single braid that you then wrap with wavy hair. Weave the Marley hair to the desired length of your hair.

Most stylists create 40-50 curls and you want to make sure they are not too big. Longer styles tend to have thinner locks compared to the jumbo locks found in shorter styles. This reduces the weight of the hair and thus reduces the stress on your head.

There are a few different methods for installing butterfly locks, but no matter which method you use, you can start by first soaking your purchased hair (if it’s synthetic) in an apple cider vinegar rinse. Choose a parting pattern and pin or twist your hair. Use shine and jam or any edge control to make the pieces nice. You can choose to use rubber bands as seen below in The Chick Naturals video below, but you don’t have to. (If you’re adding length to your hair, be sure to do a Marley braid at this point, or you can braid your hair with a water wave like The Chic Natural did in her tutorial.)

You can do this step as you go, or you can do it all at the beginning. Just take two pieces of wet hair and separate them. You want the result to be fluffy, but still relatively cohesive.

Take a crochet hook and insert it through the base of the braid, against the scalp. Place the separated hairs of the water wave in the hook of the needle, close it and pull it less than half way. You need about ¾ of a wave of water on one side to start rolling. If you are familiar with faux lock techniques, this is how you start a box braid extension that goes under a faux lock.

Now take a small strand of water and hold it with a braid. Then start wrapping the braid, and the small piece next to it, with long water hair. You should wrap the root 5-6 times to make sure it is secure to the scalp. (This will help keep your style looking good for longer.) But try not to apply too much tension. As you roll, use the thumb technique to create loops.

The best thing about butterfly locks is that it is fuss free. Be messy when curling your hair, they don’t need to be tight or controlled, the beauty is in the loops and messiness of the curl. These curls also look better over time, again the messier the better, so don’t be afraid to embrace frizz as you age.

As you wrap the hair with the water wave, gently wrap the section around your thumb as you continue wrapping two or three times. This gives the signature loops lock. Some stylists suggest doing 3 normal wraps and placing your thumb to “pick up” a section of hair before tucking it back into the wrap section.

Once you reach the desired length, you need to close the bow and seal the ends. You can achieve this by making a small loop with your finger at the end, then wrap the rest of the hair in a braid until you run out of water. You can use nail glue when wrapping the remaining inch or two for extra hold. The loop is very important, it gives a nice finish to your position and keeps the lock secure. Do not burn the ends.

If you’re more comfortable with the crochet method – it’s less time consuming – you can braid your hair, but I suggest leaving the front and back sections for individual braids/bolts to give your style some versatility. The short answer is yes, you can wash butterfly locks, but you won’t get a “real” wash. If you use the braid and wrap method, your own hair is wrapped around the synthetic hair. So you don’t have full access to it. With the crochet method, you have relatively more access to your own hair, but you still don’t have full access. So many people focus on keeping their head clean, as you will see in the video below. Not being able to fully access your own hair is the #1 reason why you don’t keep these types of styles for long; 4 weeks is a general rule of thumb. As oils and products build up, your hair becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. So while these styles (with proper maintenance) can look great for more than four weeks, the longer you don’t wash your hair, the more you’re compromising your hair and hair health.

Also, if you wash/set your curls, remember to make sure to dry them completely. Remember that you have layers of hair in this style – a braid is wrapped around more hair – so moisture can easily get trapped inside all of that hair.

As mentioned, as a general rule, we suggest keeping protective styles in for only four weeks, especially if you don’t wash the style. When it comes to removing your butterflies, patience is key. Give yourself plenty of time to remove your strands, as you usually have to detangle them first and then braid them under.
