Choose a parting and braid or twist your hair. Use Shine and Jam or any of the border controls to make the pieces neat. You can choose to use an elastic band like in The Chic Natural video below, but you don’t have to. (If you want to add length to your hair, be sure to do a Marley braid at this point, or you can create a water wave like The Chic Natural does in her tutorial.)
This step can be done as you go, or you can do everything from scratch. Simply take two sections of wavy hair and separate them. You want the results to be soft, but still relative to each other.
Take a crochet hook and place it over the base of the braid, near your head. Place the parted wavy hair in a bun, close it and pull it less than halfway through. You will need about ¾ of the wavy hair on one side to start wrapping. If you are familiar with pseudo-positioning techniques, this is very similar to how you would run the box braid extension that is underneath the pseudo-positioning.

Now take the shorter section of the wave and hold it with your braid. Then start wrapping the braid, and the shorter part next to it, with the longer wavy hair. You will want to wrap the hairline 5-6 times to make sure it is fixed to the scalp. (This will help keep your style looking neat for a longer period of time.) But try not to create too much tension. As you wrap, use the thumb technique to create loops.
The great thing about Butterfly Locs is that you can get messy. Make a mess when you wrap your hair, it doesn’t need to be tight or controlled, beauty is in the curl and bounce of the hair. These curls also look better over time, again, the messier the better, so don’t be afraid to curl your hair as you age.
As you curl your hair into waves, wrap your thumb loosely as you continue to wrap it two or three times. This will give the signature loops loc. Some stylists suggest doing 3 normal wraps, then running your thumbs through to “pick up” some hair before wrapping it back into the wrap.

After reaching the desired length, you need to close the arc and seal the ends. You can achieve this by making a small loop with your fingers at the end and then wrapping the rest of the hair in a braid until the water ripples disappear. You can use nail glue when you wrap the remaining inch or two for a stronger hold. The loop is very important, it will help you have a good finish for your charm and keep it safe. DO NOT burn the ends.
If you’re more comfortable with the crochet method – this method takes less time – you can braid your hair, but I recommend leaving the front and back for individual braids/twists for style. The short answer is yes, you can wash Butterfly Locs, but you won’t get a “real” wash. If you use the braid and wrap method, your hair will be wrapped around the synthetic hair. So you won’t have full access to it. With the crochet method, you have relatively more access to your own hair, but you still don’t have full access. So most people focus on keeping their scalp clean as you will see in the video below. Not being able to fully access your own hair is the #1 reason not to leave these hairstyles for too long; 4 weeks is the general rule. As oils and products build up, your hair can become a breeding ground for bacteria. So, while these hairstyles (if maintained properly) can look great for more than four weeks, the longer you go without washing your hair, the more you’re compromising the health of your scalp and hair. .
Also, keep in mind that if/when you wash your watches, you’ll want to dry them CAREFULLY. Remember that you have multiple layers of hair to create this style – the braid is wrapped with more hair – so it’s easier for moisture to settle into all that hair.

As mentioned, as a general rule, we recommend keeping the protective style on for only four weeks, especially if you don’t wash it while wearing it. When it comes to removing butterflies, patience is key. Give yourself plenty of time to unzip your bags, as you’ll usually have to unzip them first and then undo the braids underneath. Keep some oil and spray handy to loosen any build-up and take breaks if you feel tired or frustrated.
