Extra Small Butterfly Locs – Butterfly Locs have been all over social media for months now, but you might not have realized it at first. Here’s everything you need to know about the new boho style on stage.

This new mode of Locs is very similar to Security Mode: Stress Zones. Stranded locs are the bohemian cousin of the locs that were popular a few years ago, but the only difference between a stranded and a butterfly loc is the curled locks woven into the butterfly loc, which gives it its shape.

Butterfly lox is like the perfect combination of goddess lox and lust. The messy, bohemian style is natural, low-maintenance, and looks great. For those of us who want a style that changes over time, doesn’t require a lot of fuss to make it work, and celebrates curls and coils while protecting our hair, this The style can be yours.

Depending on how long your natural hair is and how long you want your lashes to be, you may need two types of hair. If you want to find it.

For your hair, you will need about 6-8 packs of water wave hair from 22-28 inches. These hairs are straight and bouncy and this will give you the loops that are called butterfly locs.

If you decide to go with longer locks than your hair, you will need hair filler. Of course, you can use wavy hair to fill in those spots again and you can buy some for that purpose. But many tutorials use marley hair to create a single braid that you’ll wrap around the wavy hair. Simply braid your hair with a marley to the length you want.

Most stylists do 40-50 spots and you want to make sure it’s not too many. Long styles have thinner locks than jumbo locks. This reduces the weight of the hair and thus puts tension on your scalp.

There are a few different ways to apply Butterfly Locs, but no matter which method you use, you’ll want to start by soaking your hair (if it’s synthetic) first. Usually one part vinegar, two parts water is enough. Cover hair for a few hours and wash thoroughly. If you have a sensitive scalp, this helps prevent itchiness.

Depending on how much time you have, your skill level, and your patience, there are different ways to get butterfly locs. The good thing about this procedure is that you don’t need to be a hairstylist to get good results. Most people can do this procedure in 3-6 hours, but longer periods can take longer.

Choose how to part and wear or twist your hair. Use Shine and Gem or other controls to keep layers clean. You can choose to use a rubber band as seen in the Chic Natural video below, but you don’t have to. (If you’re adding length to your hair, make sure you do a marley braid at this point or you can do a water wave braid like The Chic Natural does in her tutorial.)

This step can be done as you go or you can do it all at the beginning. Just take two pieces of wavy hair and separate them. You want the result to be simple but still put together.

Take a crochet needle and place it under your chin, next to your head. Place the water-twisted hair in the hook of the needle, close it and pull it less than halfway through. You’ll want about ¾ of the wavy hair on one side to start wrapping. If you’re familiar with the faux lok technique, this is exactly how you’d start the boxbread extension that goes under the faux lok.

Now grab a small section of wavy hair and tie it into your braid. Then start wrapping the cover, and a small piece against it, with the long side of the water waves hair. You’ll want to wrap the root 5-6 times to make sure it’s secure against the scalp. (This will help keep your style neater for longer.) But try not to apply too much pressure. As you wrap, use the finger technique to create loops.

The great thing about Butterfly Locs is that it’s okay to get messy. Be messy when curling your hair, you don’t need to be tight or controlled, the beauty is in the blur and fuzziness of the control line. These locs look better with time, and they also get worse, so don’t be afraid to accept frizz as they age.

As you wrap the wavy hair, cover a section with your thumb as you wrap two or three times. This will make the area a signature loop. Some stylists recommend doing 3 regular wraps before returning the hair to the wrapping section and inserting a finger to “pick up” some of the hair.

Once you’ve reached your desired length, you’ll need to close the space and seal the ends. You can achieve this by making a small braid with your finger at the end, then wrap the rest of the hair back until you end up with wavy hair. For extra grip you can use nail glue while wrapping the remaining inch or two. The loop is very important, it will give you a good finish in your area and keep the area safe. Do not burn the ends.

If you’re more comfortable with the crochet method – which takes less time – you can cut your hair, but I recommend leaving the front and back for individual braids/twists so the method is up to you. There are many ways. Adanna Madueke does a good job of showing how to incorporate both approaches here. (There are advantages and disadvantages (mostly good) to using crochet patterns to make box braids and similar patterns.)

This tutorial 👇🏾 is probably the best tutorial to watch if you are into crochet. Mary Kay Bella shows how she uses a crochet pattern with hair that hasn’t been Loc’d, which is helpful now that Butterfly Locs don’t already have a ton of hair. He is also very funny. I recommend watching the entire video.

Maintaining your style and keeping your scalp healthy is a very important part of a preventative regimen. Make sure your hair is washed, conditioned and well moisturized, you should also maintain it regularly.

The short answer is yes, you can wash butterfly locs, but you won’t get a “real” wash. If you used the braid and wrap method, your hair is surrounded by synthetic hair. So you won’t have full access to it. With a crochet style you have almost the same access to your hair but still not full access. Many people focus on keeping their skin clean as you will see in the video below. Not having full access to your hair is the #1 reason not to leave this type of style for long. 4 weeks is the general rule. As oils and products build up, your hair can become a breeding ground for bacteria. So while these types can (with proper care) look good for more than four weeks, the longer you go without washing your hair, the more you’re putting your scalp at risk.

Also, remember that if/when you wash your areas, you’ll want to make sure you really dry them. Remember that you have curly hair with this style – the blades wrap around a lot of hair – so it’s easy to keep moisture in all that hair.

Here’s Everything You Need To Know About Butterfly Locs

That said, cleansing your scalp (this cleanser works well) and using a dry shampoo like this is a great way to maintain some level of cleanliness when you have them.

As mentioned, as a general rule, we recommend keeping protective measures in place for only four weeks, especially if you can’t wash your style while you’re at it. Give yourself plenty of time to take your tops down, as you’ll often have to untie them and wear the bottoms. Keep some oils and a spray bottle handy to help you relax if you feel tired or agitated.
