You will find that when doing the Braid-and-Wrap method, most people use FreeTress Water Wave Braiding and Crochet Hair. You may also need to usually braid her hair or Marley to add length or thickness to your basic braid (a braid or twist to wrap the water around). Some people just use their own hair.

Using the Braid-and-Wrap method opens up the possibility for you to create curls in all kinds of colors. The blonde variations are the most popular, but I love Hair by Mason’s textured fall color curls. They are beautiful 😍!
Currently, there are only a few brands that sell pre-loc’d Butterfly Locs, namely Janet Collection, Toiotress, and Niseio. But as the style grows in popularity, there should be more players and options in the market. I, personally, prefer the crochet method because it is a huge time saver – no need to knit and then wrap; just corn and crochet. Here’s more on using this method on other types of braided hair.

The short answer is, it depends! If you have long natural hair or you want your locks to be long, you may need two types of hair.
You will need 6-8 water wave hair packs to create the signature style loops.

If you like long locks, you can use marley hair to create a braid and curly hair to wrap it around for an effortless look.
Before starting any procedure, you need to make sure that the synthetic hair you buy is clean. Soak your synthetic hair in apple cider vinegar and water (1 part vinegar to 2 parts water) for a few hours to make sure you don’t have a reaction to your hair when it’s set.
Step 1: We suggest figuring out how you want your hair to flow before you start parting and braiding. Make individual sections of your natural hair and braid each section neatly.

Use a jam or fringe control to keep sections neat and avoid using rubber bands at the roots to make installation easier.
If you want more length, weave Marley hair into each braid to create the desired length you want.
Step 2: Using two separate sections of your water wave hair, gently wrap the braided section like a cocoon, creating a sad curl at the top of the braid. You can pull the hair back a bit to create loops along the section to add the bow tie that the boho style is known for.
