It’s funny, a little mistake (a loop of hair caught in the braid) that I will make while braiding is typical for this style. You’ll find that when doing the braid-and-wrap method, most people use freetress water wave braids and crochet hair. You may also need a simple braid of hair or marley hair to add length or thickness to your basic braid (the braid or twist you will wrap the water wave hair in). Some people only use their hair.

Using the braid-and-wrap method, you can make locks in all kinds of colors. The blonde variations are the most popular, but I like Mason’s fall Textured Locks hair. They are great 😍!
Currently there are only a few brands that sell pre-loc’d Butterfly Locs, namely Janet Collection, Toytress and Niseo. But as the genre gains popularity, more players and options are sure to enter the market. Personally, I prefer the crochet method because it’s a huge time saver – no need to braid and then wrap; Just cornrow and crochet. Inspired by the 90s, the low-stress hairstyle uses water wave braid hair to achieve a more carefree and textured version of the same faux loc style. According to celebrity hairstylist Molesia George, who designed Pinnock’s brown butterfly locks, butterfly locks differ from other faux loc styles because they use a different type of hair braiding. “With simple faux locks, use marley or island twist hair, which can be heavy on your head,” explains George. But with butterfly locks, you use crochet braid hair with water waves, which is super light. Secondly, the technique used to create the look of butterfly locks is different from the usual fake locks. With normal fake locks, you use the wrap method. Make the hair so neat possible, while the butterfly lock method uses your thumb to create loops and give a slightly messy look.

Butterfly locks are achieved using the crochet hook method, looping the water wave braiding hair through a braid of your own hair and wrapping the wavy hair loosely along the length of the wavy hair to give a freehand and textured look. The short loops created by the wavy hair along the length of the butterfly locks resemble butterfly wings, while the hairstyle itself is very light.
If you want to try butterfly locks at home, here are some DIY tips and tricks you should know. “If you plan on doing them yourself, watch as many videos as you can,” says London-based hairstylist Yasmin Botchway. Leave the haircut on for up to four weeks and then remove it.”
Before you start perfecting your crochet technique, George encourages you to do a nice deep conditioning treatment on your clean hair, then moisturize with a moisturizing leave-in cream before installing the butterfly locks. Oil your scalp. Once your hair is done, take a moment to break apart the water wave curls so that it is easier to wrap the hair once you get started. Botchway also recommends using two mirrors when creating butterfly locks, for the front and back of your hair, making sure you have clean and clear sections for the perfect base for a polished result.
