In homes, churches and airline stores around Nashville, Brittany Starks and a team of dedicated volunteers help parents lighten their load, one flight at a time.
Starks’ idea was simple: offer free rent to kids to take some of the stress off parents at the start of the school year. As anyone who’s ever braided their hair can tell you, it’s a huge deal: Typically, braiding your hair can cost hundreds of dollars and involve spending five to six hours at a braiding salon, if not more.
Starks made his proposal in early August in a post on the Hip Antioch Facebook page. Although she expected some interest, she never expected her idea to take off the way it did.

“I thought it would be five to seven kids, but it ended up being 35 kids,” she said of the initial response. Since then, she has lost count of how many children have had their hair braided.
“It’s been very hard. I haven’t been able to sleep. I’m extremely tired, but it’s worth it,” Starks said. “I feel like I’m doing it for a good cause.”
The start of any school year can be stressful, but with the rise in cases of COVID-19 due to the highly transmissible delta variant and the explosive debate over mandatory masks in schools, this year has been especially difficult for families.

It’s not just a godsend for parents; it’s a huge morale booster for kids dealing with the stress and uncertainty of going back to school during a pandemic.
At first, Starks did everything herself, but eventually she was able to gather more volunteers to join her.
They braid hair in the evenings and on weekends and fit it around other duties, which isn’t easy, especially for Starks, who is a single mother of two and works three jobs.

“It builds confidence,” Starks said. “Some kids come in, they don’t smile, they don’t talk, and then, you know, when they get their hair done, they start to open up a little bit more, and then when they’re done, they’re just smiling and happy. It’s great to see.”
“When your hair is done, I feel like you feel so much better about everything,” she continued. “[When] your hair is done, you feel confident, you go to school with a fresh start – even though COVID-19 is knocking everyone down.”
While the pandemic’s effect on school-aged children is still being studied, it’s clear that students everywhere are still adjusting to a very different “new normal.”

After experiencing unexpected generosity herself earlier this year, Starks was inspired to come up with a way to help others who might need it.
She was in the process of moving to a new house and was going through a rough patch – many of her children’s clothes were still in storage and she feared she would have nothing to wear before the school year started.
Then, she said, a family friend surprised her by giving her children new backpacks containing two outfits each, as well as school supplies and a new pair of shoes.

“It wasn’t anything fancy, it was actually from Wal-Mart, but I didn’t care because it was so nice that he just did it,” she said. “[Because] I don’t really have anything for them to start school with.”
“It really meant a lot because I’m a single mom, I’ve been homeless before, I’ve been through some tough situations… so whatever, just to relieve some pressure, it makes you feel good,” she continued she.

Going forward, Starks and the other volunteers have committed to giving up one Saturday a month to continue the free charter flight service.
But even though their time is free, they have to pay for the supplies: After fielding requests from supporters, Starks has since set up a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the cost of the flyaways and other materials, and the group is almost halfway to reaching his goal of $15,000.

“I really hope people start being nicer and helping instead of judging and always wanting to talk about someone because of their situation instead of helping them,” she said.
