Butterfly Locs Vs Box Braids – Butterfly Locs have been trending on social media for months, but you might not have noticed at first. Here’s everything you need to know about the new boho style on the block.

These new-style locks look like a staple of defensive style: distressed curls. Distressed locs are the bohemian cousin of the beautiful fake locs that were popular a few years ago, but the difference between distressed and butterfly locs is the curls that butterfly locs create, giving them a unique look.

Butterfly Locs are like the perfect mix of goddess locs and lustful twists. Bohemian style is an ethereal, low-maintenance and very natural look. For those of us who want a style that changes over time, doesn’t require a lot of fuss to make it work, and celebrates curls and coils while protecting our hair, this might be the style for you.

How To Do Amazing Butterfly Locs

Depending on the length of your natural hair and how long you want your curls to be, you may need two types of hair extensions. If you want to lock it

If you have hair, you will need about 6-8 bundles of water wave hair that are 22-28 inches long. This hair is curly and bouncy and gives you the characteristic locks that give you the name Butterfly Locs.

If you choose to use hair extensions that are longer than your own hair, you will need a full head of hair. Technically, you can also use wavy hair to fill in curls and buy more for that purpose. However, many tutorials use Marley hair to create individual braids, which you then wrap around the wavy hair. Simply braid the marley hair to the desired length.

Most stylists do 40-50 curls and you want to make sure they are not too big. Longer styles tend to have a finer curl than shorter styles. This helps in reducing the weight of the hair and thus the tension on the scalp.

There are a few different ways to apply Butterfly Locs, but whichever method you use, you may want to start by rinsing your purchased hair (if it’s synthetic) with apple cider vinegar water. One part vinegar to two parts water is usually enough. Wet your hair for a few hours and rinse well. This will help prevent itching if the scalp is sensitive.

There are several ways to achieve Butterfly Locs, depending on how much time you have, skill level, and patience. The great thing about this style is that you don’t have to be a master braider to achieve beautiful results. Most people can do this style in 3-6 hours, but the longer the length, the more time it will take.

Choose a parting style and braid or twist your hair. Use Shine and Jam or any edge guide to keep the pieces neat. As you can see in The Chic Natural video below, you can choose to use rubber bands, but you don’t have to. (If you’re adding length to your hair, don’t forget to braid Marley’s hair, or you can braid a water wave like in her tutorial The Chic Natural.)

You can do this step as you go, or you can do it all at the beginning. Just take the two parts of the water wave and separate them. You want the result to be soft, but still relatively put together.

Take the crochet hook and insert it into the scalp from the base of the braid. Place the parted water wave hair in the hook of the needle, close it and pull less than half way. You want to get about ¾ of the tide on one side to start the roll. If you are familiar with fake loc techniques, this is very similar to starting to expand the box under the fake loc.

Now take a short section of the water wave and secure it with a braid. Then start weaving and wrapping the short part with the long wavy part against it. Wrap the root 5-6 times to make sure it is firmly attached to the scalp. (This will help keep your style beautiful for longer.) But try not to apply too much tension. Use the thumb technique to create loops while wrapping.

The great thing about Butterfly Locs is that it’s okay to be messy. Get messy when braiding your hair, it doesn’t need to be tight or controlled, beauty is in the fuzziness of loops and curls. These stains will also look better over time, again, the better the leather, so don’t be afraid to accept the mess as you age.

When wrapping your water wave hair, wrap the section loosely around your thumb, continuing to wrap two or three times. This gives good signature loops. Some stylists recommend doing 3 regular wraps and then putting your thumb in before placing a section of hair in the wrap section.

After reaching the desired length, close the zipper and seal the ends. This can be achieved by making a small loop at the end with your finger, then wrap the rest of the hair back into the braid until the water wave is finished. You can use nail glue to wrap the remaining inch for extra hold. The loop is very important, it gives you a nice finish on the lock and keeps the lock secure. Do not burn the ends.

If you like the braided style – it takes less time – you can put your hair up, but I recommend leaving the front and back for individual braids/twists to keep the style versatile. Adanna Madueke does a great job of showing how she uses both techniques here. (Here are the pros and cons (mostly pros) of using the crochet method to create box braids and similar styles.)

THIS TUTORIAL 👇🏾 is probably the BEST tutorial to watch if you love crochet. Mary K Bella shows how to use the weave technique with unpre-twisted hair, which is helpful right now because there aren’t a ton of Butterfly Locs out there. He’s also really funny. I recommend watching the entire video.

Keeping your style and scalp healthy is a very important part of a protective style. Make sure your hair is washed, deeply conditioned and well moisturized before using curlers. This style should also be maintained at all times.

The short answer is yes, you can wash Butterfly Locs, but you won’t get a “real” wash. When using the braiding and wrapping method, your own hair is wrapped around the synthetic hair. So you won’t have full access to it. With a weave, you have relatively more access to your hair, but still not full access. That’s why most people focus on keeping their scalp clean, as you can see in the video below. Not having full access to your hair is the #1 reason not to leave these styles in for too long; 4 weeks is the general rule. As oils and products build up, your hair can become a breeding ground for bacteria. While these styles (with proper care) can look great for more than four weeks, the longer you don’t wash your hair, the more you risk your scalp and hair health.

Also, remember to THOROUGHLY dry your hair when you wash it. Remember, you have hair in this style – a braid wrapped around more hair – so it’s easy to keep moisture all over your hair.

However, cleansing your scalp (this cleansing water works great) and using a dry shampoo like this one is a great way to stay clean when you have frizz.

As mentioned above, as a general rule, we only recommend wearing a protective style for four weeks, especially if you don’t wash the style while it’s on. Patience is key when launching Butterfly Locs. Allow plenty of time for your curls to come down, as you usually have to untangle them first and then untangle the braid underneath. Keep the oil and spray bottle ready to decongest and take a break when you feel tired or frustrated.
