Butterfly Locs After 2 Weeks – Butterfly Locs have been trending on social media for months now, but you might not have noticed at first. Here’s everything you need to know about the new boho style on the block.

This new style of locs is very similar to a staple of protective styles: distressed locs. Distressed locs are the bohemian cousin of the neat faux locs that were popular a few years ago, but one difference between distressed and Butterfly Locks is the curls created in Butterfly Locks that give them their signature look.

Butterfly Locs is like the perfect blend of goddess locs and passion. Messy, bohemian style is ethereal, low maintenance and very natural. For those of us who have changed over time, don’t need a lot of fuss to pull off, and want to celebrate curls and coils while protecting our own hair, this style might be for you.

Then for your own hair you will need about 6-8 bundles of water waves that are about 22-28 inches. This hair is curly and bouncy and it gives you the characteristic loops that give you the name Butterfly Locs.

If you decide to go with longer hair than your own, you will need a filler. Technically you can also use wavy hair to fill in locks and buy more of it for that purpose. But many tutorials use Marley hair to create individual braids, which you then wrap with wavy hair. Simply braid the hair gauze into your hair to the desired length.

The 5 Different Stages Of The Loc Journey By Month

Most stylists do 40-50 locs and you want to make sure they aren’t too bulky. Longer styles have thinner locks than the jumbo locks seen in shorter styles. This helps reduce the weight of the hair and therefore the tension on your scalp.

There are a few different methods of installing Butterfly Locs, but regardless of the method you use, you can start by soaking your purchased hair (if it’s synthetic) in an apple cider vinegar rinse. Usually one part vinegar to two parts water is enough. Soak the hair for several hours and rinse well. This will help prevent itching if you have a sensitive scalp.

There are different ways to achieve Butterfly Locs depending on how much time you have, skill level and patience. The great thing about this style is that you don’t need to be a hairstylist to achieve beautiful results. Most people can do this style in 3-6 hours, but the longer it is, the longer it will take.

Choose a parting pattern and braid or twist your hair. Use Shine and Jam or other edge controls to keep the pieces neat. You may choose to use rubber bands as shown in The Chic Natural video below, but you don’t have to. (If you’re adding length to your hair, don’t forget to braid Marley’s hair at this point, or you can do a water wave braid like The Chic Natural in her tutorial.)

You can do this step as you go, or you can do it all at the beginning. Just take two pieces of water wave hair and separate them. You want the result to be fluffy but still relatively cohesive.

Take the knitting needle and attach it to the base of your braid, on your scalp. Put the split water wave hairs on the hook of the needle, close it and pull it less than halfway. You want to start wrapping ¾ of the water wave to one side. If you are familiar with faux locs techniques, this is very similar to how you would start a box braid extension that goes under the faux locs.

Now take a shorter section of hair and secure it with your braid. Then start wrapping the braid and the short section opposite it with the longer water wave hair. You want to wrap the root 5-6 times so that it is firmly attached to the scalp. (This will help keep your style neat for longer.) But try not to use too much tension. Use the thumb technique to make loops in the wrap.

The great thing about Butterfly Locs is that it’s okay to be messy. Be messy when braiding hair, they should not be tight or controlled, beauty is in the curls and tangles of the hair. These locs also look better with time, still the messier the better, so don’t be afraid to accept the wrinkles as they age.

When you wrap the water wave hair, open a part around the finger two or three times. This gives location signature loops. Some stylists recommend doing 3 normal wraps and then inserting your thumb before bringing the hair to the part you’re wrapping.

Once you’ve reached your desired length, you need to cover the ground and seal the ends. You can achieve this by making a small loop with your finger, then wrapping the rest of the hair back into the braid until the water wave runs out of hair. You can use nail glue to wrap the remaining inch or two for extra hold. The barrel is very important, it will give you a good end to the success and keep the success. Do not burn the ends.

If you’re more comfortable with braids, this will take less time – you can part your hair, but I recommend leaving the front and back sections for individual braids/twists for versatility in your style. Adanna Madueke does a great job of showing how to incorporate both approaches here. (Here are the pros and cons (mostly pros) of using the weave method.

THIS tutorial 👇🏾 is probably the best one to watch if you’re into knitting. Mary K Bella shows how to use the weave technique with non-pre-Loc’d hair, which is helpful because there aren’t a ton of pre-Loc’d Butterfly Locs hair. He’s also really funny. I recommend watching the entire video.

Maintaining your style and keeping your scalp healthy is an important part of having a protective style. Make sure your hair is washed, deeply conditioned and well moisturized before installing locs, and this style should be maintained from time to time.

The short answer is yes, you can wash Butterfly Locs, but not “real” washes. If you have used a braiding technique, your own hair will be wrapped around synthetic hair. So you can’t get full access to it. With a weave, you have relatively more access to your hair, but you still don’t have full access. Therefore, most people pay attention to keeping their scalp clean, as you can see in the video below. Not having the full potential of your own hair is the #1 reason not to leave these types of styles in for too long; 4 weeks is the general rule of thumb. When oils and products build up, your hair can become a breeding ground for bacteria. So while these styles (with proper care) can look great for more than four weeks, the longer you go without washing your hair, the more you’re risking your scalp and hair health.

Also remember that when you wash your locs, you want to dry them THOROUGHLY. Remember, you have layers of hair in this style—the braid is wrapped around more hair, so it’s easy to get moisture all over that hair.

That said, cleansing your scalp (this cleansing water works great) and using a dry shampoo like this one is a great way to keep it clean.

As mentioned, as a general rule, we recommend only wearing protective styles for four weeks, especially if you don’t wash your style in the laundry. When it comes to Butterfly Locs, patience is key. Allow plenty of time to let your hair down as you often have to take it down first and then the braids underneath. When you feel tired or feeling down, have some essential oils and a spray bottle ready to take a break and release some build-up.
